Unitization and Grouping Mediate Dissociations in Memory for New Associations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous research has demonstrated performance dissociations between explicit and implicit memory for newly acquired associations between unrelated words. The present article accounts for this finding in terms of two factors: unitization and grouping. Unitization involves representing previously separate items as a single unit, and grouping involves forming associations among separate representations. We propose that grouping facilitates primarijy explicit remembering by providing the routes for accessing encoded word pairs via the cues available during testing; in contrast, unitization affects primarily implicit remembering by enabling the redintegration of studied items in response to partial cues. Consistent with this view, the results from two experiments show that by focusing processing on the relation between target word pairs, explicit remembering can be manipulated independently of implicit remembering. Two further experiments reveal that a materials manipulation—concreteness of words—affects both implicit and explicit remembering.

Associative memory in aging: the effect of unitization on source memory.
In normal aging, memory for associations declines more than memory for individual items. Unitization is an encoding process defined by creation of a new single entity to represent a new arbitrary association. The current study tested the hypothesis that age-related differences in associative memory can be reduced by encoding instructions that promote unitization. In two experiments, groups of 2...
متن کاملObject unitization and associative memory formation are supported by distinct brain regions.
While it has been established that the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is critical for successful memory formation, the precise contribution of one of the key MTL subregions, the perirhinal cortex (PrC), has been the subject of intense focus and debate. Although this region has been implicated in nonassociative item encoding, recent neuroimaging data have revealed that it also contributes to the bin...
متن کاملEffect of unitization on associative recognition in amnesia.
We examined how associative recognition performance in amnesic patients is mediated by use of a unitized (i.e., holistic) encoding strategy, and the degree to which the unitization effect is related to sparing of familiarity-based recognition. Participants studied word pairs as either separate lexical units in sentences (i.e., nonunitized) or as compounds (unitized). Under standard recognition ...
متن کاملSelective Effects of Interference on Implicit and Explicit Memory for New Associations
On standard memory tests, such as recall and recognition, subjects are required to recollect where, when, and under what specific circumstances a target item was acquired; on priming tests, such as word completion and word identification, no reference is made to the specific circumstances accompanying an item's acquisition. We have used the labels explicit and implicit to describe the forms of ...
متن کاملERP correlates of source memory: unitized source information increases familiarity-based retrieval.
Source memory tests typically require subjects to make decisions about the context in which an item was encoded and are thought to depend on recollection of details from the study episode. Although it is generally believed that familiarity does not contribute to source memory, recent behavioral studies have suggested that familiarity may also support source recognition when item and source info...
